Ratings

We take our jobs as tastemakers and critiquing the latest albums in Hip-Hop very seriously. Opposed to just throwing Cigs at a dart board to pick a score, our review crew deliberately analyzes each album thoroughly to come up with the most accurate opinions possible. Below are the strict criteria for every single pillar on our scale.

5 CIGARETTES

A MASTERPIECE — Not a “classic” because that word indicates the time and we all know if we could predict the future, we would have submitted our blueprints for the Internet years ago.

However, you can make assumptions and educated guesses. An album with a 5 Cig rating will be a crown jewel. A rating like this is achievable through an album with the majority of extremely strong cuts that fit perfect in the artist’s persona. One of those albums that make everybody’s head spin around for years to come and most likely win some awards, critically and/or commercially.

4.5 CIGARETTES

MAJOR — Simply the crème de la crème. Incredible music cranking on all cylinders even the strongest of naysayers can’t deny. Although it may fall short of absolute glory, it comes so close, no one will really mind.

4 CIGARETTES

FRESH — Impressive body of work. Naturally there’s songs that could’ve been left off but overall it’s a winner artistically. Good flow of things and easily worth your money, no question. Nice for building character in the artist’s catalog. In one word, it’s “FRESH.”

3.5 CIGARETTES

SATISFACTORY — While not the greatest album in the world, there’s plenty of factors here that make for a solid composition. Creativity, innovation, and overall execution that rate above average, thus deeming the project noteworthy.

3 CIGARETTES

AIGHT — Basically one that leaves fans split down the middle. Definitely some bright spots but the weaker moments are bad enough to offset the positive contributions. Could either be that the artist exceeded expectations on what would otherwise be a snoozer or maybe a couple of blunders forced the album’s potential to go down south. This rating is not terrible because the album contains something for everybody. But just not enough material to please them immensely.

2.5 CIGARETTES

SUB-PAR — Just “Average Joe” work. Probably has a strong single or two but plenty of redundant and rehashed topics. Usually heavy with low caliber rhymes and/or beats as well. There may be hints of promise for improvement but it’ll better luck next time with this one.

2 CIGARETTES

WEAK—Pretty much a lame outing in most, if not all, aspects save for a handful of bright spots.

1.5/1 CIGARETTE

1 CIGARETTE

COMPLETE TRASH — A wack album. Straight up. Not even worthy of being used to break up weed or throw as a frisbee. Save the hard drive space for something more worthwhile.
